Sounds of summer

Usually my evening computer routine is to catch up on my reading and then if time and enrgy permit, I’ll give some thought to a post. Sometimes that doesn’t pan out other times it does. Most of the time, I get up from the computer and think while doing something else. Since it has finally warmed up here, I have been doing that on the back veranda for the last couple weeks.

There are lots of sounds, sights and smells that I find comforting and/or remind me of home. The obvious one that came to mind while I was sitting on the back veranda is sitting on the back veranda. Even on a calm night like tonight there is a cool breeze back there. If it is clear I can see constellations. Over the last couple weeks I’ve been hearing the outdoors come to life: the geese, loons and mallards voices carrying across the lake; the frogs croaking at each other; the crickets; an occasional howl in the distance….

While living in Miramichi, these sounds were mostly drowned out by the sound of traffic and/or activity in the neighbourhood. It wasn’t until we were settled in here last summer that I really came to appreciate the sounds of summer. It wasn’t so much that I didn’t notice them. Rather I had mostly taken them for granted.

This post is being listed in the Thinking Homeschoolers bi-weekly carnival.

Minor Tweaking

I’m going to make some minor adjustments to the template. I want the content to load before the sidebars. I think I will be able to do that without hosing the front end. If you do see something along that line, it should only take a minute or 2 to sort it out.

Update: that worked as expected.

Mother's Day Launch

First, I want to wish all the moms out there a happy Mother’s Day. Hopefully, the appreciation for all the things you do for your family isn’t reserved for one day. But, I’m glad there is a day set aside to recognize mothers.

One of the things we are doing this year to recognize Andrea’s contribution to our family is launch our professional website. Andrea has been instrumental in bringing our consulting career back to life.

In the previous incarnation of the consulting business, I did the consulting and Andrea looked after the home office. In this incarnation, I’m expecting to leave the work-a-day world sometime in the next couple years and we will be splitting the work between us. As it stands now, she is doing the brunt of the work and I’m putting in a few hours each week.

So, if you have a minute, check out our site and let us know what you think. We expect to expand the content on the site over the next few months.

For now, all comments will go into moderation. There are a few spam plugins available for TextPattern. I haven’t had a chance to look at any of them yet. Between Andrea and I we will try to check a few times a day and approve comments as needed.

As a side note. It was really nice to have comments again :)

Straight man

Being the straight man and delivering one liners with the best in outward appearance of seriousness is one of the things that I bring to our household. Andrea had quite a few comments on one of my many straight man moments.

Despite the fact that a couple readers didn’t see the humour initially, they raised a very valid point. One of the keys to marital longevity/success is good communication.

Humour goes a long way toward sustaining a marriage as well. Despite the variety of hardships and issues we have encountered in the last 20 years, Andrea and I have laughed together alot.

A third key to a good marriage is thinking of and imagining yourself in your partner’s place. Yes, your partner. Look at it like you are in this together; that you’re a team and take the time to evaluate what sort of teammate you are.
